Narrative therapy in Australia

Narrative therapy has deep roots in Australia and New Zealand, emerging in the 1980s through the work of Michael White and David Epston. Its starting point is simple but powerful: you make sense of your life through stories, and many of those stories are shaped by family, institutions, and culture. Narrative practice does not treat the person as the problem. Instead you and the therapist explore the story that places the problem at the centre, discovering where that story came from and which parts of life lie outside it. The aim is not a quick fix. Rather, the work builds toward a preferred story - an account of your values and commitments that can be lived day to day.

What distinguishes narrative work is its attention to language and description. Therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches often emphasise separating problems from persons, attending to thin descriptions that have become dominant, and locating small but meaningful departures from those descriptions. The process is collaborative and conversational, inviting you to name what matters and to notice moments that do not fit the familiar storyline. While many clinicians in Australia combine narrative work with other approaches, the narrative lens offers a particular way of attending to meaning, identity and social context that appeals to people who prefer a conversational, story-focused approach.

What narrative therapy can help with

People come to narrative-oriented work with many different concerns. A common thread is a sense that a narrow, hard conclusion about yourself - a thin story - is leaving most of your life out. That thin story might be expressed as a belief that you are 'not good enough', that you always end up alone, or that an event permanently defines who you are. Narrative practices are suited to exploring how such conclusions formed and where they are sustained by wider expectations from family, workplaces or culture.

In Australia you will often find narrative approaches used with grief and loss, identity questions and life transitions, shame and self-criticism, repeating relationship patterns, and issues that touch on culture, family and belonging. People who have experienced upsetting events may use narrative conversations to notice unique outcomes - moments that do not fit the problem story - and to slowly re-author a story that better reflects their values. While trauma-related experiences are sometimes addressed within narrative conversations, the approach is distinct from therapies that focus primarily on symptom reduction or past insight. There is no way to tell in advance whether narrative work will suit you; most people use a first conversation to find out how the approach feels in practice.

How narrative therapy works in an online format

Narrative therapy is fundamentally conversational and reflective, which means it translates well to video-based online sessions. You still need a quiet, uninterrupted place to talk and time set aside for reflection. Good video quality helps, but the relational qualities of curiosity, respectful questioning and collaborative meaning-making are far more important than the latest equipment. Some therapists also use telephone or text-based options for parts of the work, but many prefer video when they are engaging in re-authoring conversations or using practices such as outsider witnesses and definitional ceremony, which rely on attention to voice and expression.

Because most clinicians list narrative therapy alongside other approaches, you may notice sessions that blend narrative ideas with elements from expressive therapies, family work, or solution-focused practice. If your context includes cultural, linguistic or family-specific considerations, an online format can allow you to work with a practitioner who has relevant background even if they are located in a different city. Remember that online therapy crosses state borders within Australia - it is important that any clinician you speak with is appropriately registered or accredited for the work they offer in your jurisdiction.

Checking registration and professional membership in Australia

It is sensible to verify a therapist's registration or membership before beginning work. If a practitioner is registered with AHPRA you can search the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency register by name to confirm their registration status, practitioner type and any conditions on their registration. For counsellors and psychotherapists who are not covered by AHPRA, professional associations such as the Australian Counselling Association, the Australian Association of Social Workers and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia maintain membership directories. You can use those online search tools to confirm whether a person is a member and to learn about the type of membership they hold.

When you check a practitioner's standing, look for a registration or membership number and the currency of that registration. If anything is unclear you can contact the association directly to ask about their membership lookup process. Keep in mind that a listing in our directory indicating that someone lists narrative therapy among their approaches does not alone prove any particular training or credential in narrative practice. Asking about registration or association membership is a practical step that helps you understand a practitioner's professional background.

Choosing a therapist who works narratively in Australia

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision and fit matters. When you contact a practitioner who lists narrative therapy among their approaches, it is reasonable to ask direct questions about how they work. Ask how much of their practice is narrative and what a typical session looks like. Enquire about the language they use to describe externalising practices, unique outcomes, re-authoring or re-membering conversations, outsider witnesses and definitional ceremony. Asking where they learned to incorporate narrative ideas can be useful, but remember that a listing of the approach does not guarantee formal education in that specific method.

Use an initial conversation to notice whether the therapist invites your stories, asks curious questions, and treats problems as separate from who you are. Fit is about more than approach - consider whether they have experience with the cultural, family and linguistic contexts that matter to you, and whether they hold qualifications or memberships that you trust. If you are weighing online work against seeing someone in person, think about practicalities such as travel and the convenience of meeting from home, and whether you feel able to speak freely in your chosen environment. Some people value meeting face to face for early sessions before moving online, while others find online sessions just as effective for narrative conversations.

Above all, remember that most people use a first conversation to decide whether an approach and a practitioner feel right. There is no single indicator that will tell you in advance if narrative therapy will suit you. Asking clear questions about approach, practice and registration gives you the information you need to make that first contact with confidence and curiosity.

Finding a good match and next steps

If you are interested in narrative work, consider reading several profiles to compare focus areas, experience with family and cultural issues, languages spoken and professional memberships. Plan a short initial conversation with one or two practitioners to see how they listen and whether their conversational style matches what you need. When you talk, it is appropriate to ask how they typically use narrative practices, how they think about unique outcomes in a client's life, and what they expect you to notice between sessions. That kind of enquiry helps you understand how the work might unfold and whether it aligns with your values.

Narrative therapy offers a distinct way of working with stories, identity and belonging, and many people in Australia find it helpful when they want to explore the meanings that shape their life. Use the directory to learn about different practitioners and to plan initial conversations where you can ask about approach and professional standing. Your experience of narrative work will depend on the relationship you build with a therapist and the attention you both give to the stories you want to change or expand.

Questions worth asking a therapist

  • How do you usually work with people where I live?
  • How much of your work is narrative, and what does that look like in a session?
  • What does a first session cover?
  • How would we tell together whether this is helping?
  • Are you licensed or registered where I live?
