Narrative therapy in the United Kingdom

Narrative therapy began in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s through the work of Michael White and David Epston and has since travelled into many countries, including the United Kingdom. At its heart is the idea that people make sense of life through stories. These stories can be helpful and sustaining, or they can be thin - narrow conclusions about who someone is that leave most of a life out. In narrative practice the problem is treated as something that happens to a person rather than something that defines them. That separation - often called externalising - creates room to describe, examine and respond to difficulties without reducing identity to a difficulty.

When you look for someone who works narratively you will encounter therapists who place value on descriptions - whether they are thin and limiting or rich and detailed - and who help people notice exceptions to the dominant story. Those exceptions are often called unique outcomes. Over time the work is organised around re-authoring conversations that support a preferred story - an account of values and commitments that makes sense in ordinary life. While most practitioners combine narrative ideas with other approaches, narrative work retains a distinctive attention to language, culture and relational context in the way problems are named and explored.

What narrative therapy can help with

Narrative practice is commonly used by people seeking a different kind of conversation about their experience. In the United Kingdom people often choose a narrative approach when grappling with grief and loss, identity questions and life transitions, deep shame or persistent self-criticism, repeating relationship patterns, or dilemmas that involve culture, family and belonging. Narrative conversations focus on the thin, hard conclusions that can get handed down by family, schools, workplaces or wider culture - those brief accounts that flatten complexity into a label. The therapy invites you to describe those conclusions clearly, locate them in social or relational contexts, and look for moments that do not fit the familiar account.

Some people bring experiences that feel overwhelming or traumatic and find narrative work useful for separating the problem's influence from their sense of self. Others are drawn to narrative work because it names the social and cultural forces that shape stories about competence, gender, ethnicity or sexuality. It is important to be clear that there is no way to tell in advance whether narrative therapy will suit a particular person. Most people start with an initial conversation to discover whether the therapist's way of working and the tone of their sessions feel like a good match.

How narrative therapy works in an online format

Narrative therapy is conversational and reflective, which adapts well to video and telephone sessions. Online settings allow you to bring lived context into the conversation in ways that can be practical and revealing. The work tends to be driven by careful listening, questions that encourage richer descriptions, and invitations to notice exceptions to the problem story. These elements translate directly to remote sessions. For example, an externalising conversation - where the problem is given a name and treated as separate - can be held over video as effectively as in person, and unique outcomes can be explored by looking at concrete moments from daily life.

When planning online work, the most important factors are a comfortable environment and minimal interruptions. You do not need specialist equipment; a stable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone are usually sufficient. Many practitioners who list narrative therapy among their approaches also bring complementary methods into sessions, so it is reasonable to ask how narrative ideas are combined with other clinical approaches. Therapists who practise in the United Kingdom should be registered with an appropriate professional body and able to explain where they are registered and what that registration covers.

How to verify a therapist's registration with BACP, HCPC or NCPS

Verifying professional registration is a practical step when considering online therapy in the United Kingdom. Each regulatory or membership body maintains a searchable register. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) lists counsellors and psychotherapists who hold membership and, in some cases, accreditation. The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registers certain practitioner professions such as clinical psychologists and other regulated occupations. Some registrants may be listed with national or specialist registers such as the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

To check registration, use the relevant organisation's online search function and enter the therapist's full name or registration number if provided. Look for confirmation of their registration status, the professional title under which they are registered, and any protected or accredited qualifications they list. It is also helpful to check whether the register provides information about complaints procedures or professional standards. If a therapist works across borders or offers international sessions, confirm where they are registered and whether that registration covers the country in which they are located when providing sessions.

What to look for on a register

On a professional register, pay attention to the exact wording of the entry - the practitioner's professional title, any noted specialisms, and whether there are restrictions or conditions recorded. A registration entry typically shows the date of registration and may provide contact details or a record of professional conduct decisions. If anything is unclear, a member of the register's staff can usually explain what the entry means and how to interpret the information for your situation.

Choosing a therapist who works narratively in the United Kingdom

When choosing a therapist who lists narrative therapy among their approaches, the most informative step is a direct conversation. Ask how much of their work draws on narrative ideas and what a typical session looks like. It is reasonable to ask how they name problems in conversation - whether they tend to use externalising language and how they work with exceptions and unique outcomes. Because listing narrative therapy on a profile is not, on its own, evidence of specific training, it is appropriate to ask where they studied narrative ideas and how they integrate them with other methods. Most practitioners will describe their influences and how they work rather than presenting a single, fixed model.

Evaluate fit through the tone of the first conversation as much as through credentials. Notice whether questions encourage fuller descriptions of your experience, whether the therapist explores context and meanings, and whether the conversation leaves you with a sense of greater possibility rather than a single explanation. If in-person meetings are an option, consider what you value from face-to-face contact and what benefits might come from remote sessions - such as geographic reach or continuity across moves. Ultimately, the right match depends on how comfortable you feel with the therapist's approach, the clarity of their answers about narrative practice and registration, and whether their style supports the kind of story work you want to undertake.

Wherever you are in the United Kingdom, use the listing profiles to compare focus areas, languages spoken, professional registration and the combination of approaches therapists describe. Ask direct questions about the role narrative ideas will play, and plan a first conversation to see how the practice unfolds in real time. That first step is the most reliable way to find out whether a narrative approach feels helpful for the concerns you are bringing to therapy.

Questions worth asking a therapist

  • How do you usually work with people where I live?
  • How much of your work is narrative, and what does that look like in a session?
  • What does a first session cover?
  • How would we tell together whether this is helping?
  • Are you licensed or registered where I live?
