Understanding self-love through a narrative lens

When you think about self-love, you are often carrying a collection of stories - some explicit, some barely noticed - that shape how you judge yourself, how you relate to others and what you allow in your life. Narrative therapy, developed in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s by Michael White and David Epston, starts from the idea that these stories are the medium through which people make sense of their lives. The narrative approach focuses on how certain stories become dominant - thin and unkind accounts that may have been handed down by family, schools, workplaces or wider culture - and how those stories influence your sense of worth and self-regard.

Rather than concentrating primarily on changing thoughts or skills, narrative practitioners invite you to examine the shape of the story itself. They will help you notice language that frames you as the problem, explore where that framing came from, and look for moments that do not fit the familiar account. In work about self-love this means attending to the patterns that have come to define you - the recurring judgments, the roles you feel obliged to play, the values you believe you must hide - and considering other possible stories that better reflect your commitments and hopes.

How narrative therapy works with self-love

In narrative work the issue of self-love is approached as something that happens to you in a story, rather than as an essential flaw in you. Practitioners use externalising conversations to talk about the problem as separate from you so that it can be described, questioned and placed in context. For example, instead of labelling you as "shy" or "unlovable," a narrative therapist might help you name the negative effects of a story - calling it the Critic or the Shrinking Voice - and then describe what that named problem does in your life. This creates distance and makes it possible to examine patterns without your identity being reduced to them.

Another key practice is tracing the origins of the familiar story. You and your therapist will explore when the story first appeared, who helped shape it, and which cultural or institutional messages keep it alive. Thin description - an initial, limited account - is contrasted with richer description that brings into view values, intentions and meaningful exceptions. The therapist will look for unique outcomes - moments when you acted from a different set of values or experienced warmth toward yourself - and bring those forward as evidence that the dominant story is not the whole story. Over time these moments are woven into re-authoring conversations and re-membering conversations that help you build a preferred story - an account of who you are that better fits your values and commitments and that you can live by in ordinary life.

What to expect in narrative sessions for self-love

If you choose to work with a therapist who uses narrative practices, early conversations tend to be exploratory and conversational. Expect questions that invite you to tell stories about particular events, relationships and turning points. The therapist will often ask you to describe a scene in detail - what happened, who was there, what you did and felt - and then attend to the language you use to describe yourself. Rather than offering quick solutions, the therapist listens for the recurring plotlines and the characters that keep those plots in place.

Externalising language will appear early on as you name the problem and describe its effects. As sessions progress, the work typically shifts toward gathering unique outcomes and exploring alternative narratives. Re-authoring is a gradual process in which you and the therapist investigate different meanings for past events, expand the network of people and values that support your preferred story, and experiment with small actions that enact that story. Some therapists also invite outsider witnesses or arrange definitional ceremonies as ways of bringing community perspectives into the recounting and celebration of change. Keep in mind that most practitioners who list narrative therapy among their approaches combine it with other methods, so the proportion of explicit narrative work in any session will vary. It is helpful to ask during a first conversation how much of the work they expect to be narrative and what a typical session looks like.

Is a narrative approach the right fit for self-love?

There is no way to tell in advance whether a narrative approach will suit you. People who are often drawn to narrative work are those who do not want to be reduced to a diagnosis or who feel that a story handed to them by family or culture no longer fits. If you are interested in exploring how language, relationships and culture shape your self-regard, you may find narrative methods appealing because they focus on meaning and identity rather than symptom lists or skill drills. Narrative therapy contrasts with approaches that primarily target thought content, such as cognitive-behavioural methods, or those that focus mainly on building skills. It also differs from approaches that centre on uncovering long-standing unconscious dynamics, like some psychodynamic work, by emphasizing present stories and the possibilities for re-authoring them.

Many therapists integrate narrative work with other techniques to meet a client's needs. For some people, a narrative framework provides the map for understanding their story while other methods offer tools for managing distressing moments. For others, narrative conversations alone are the most useful route to clearer self-understanding and to actions that reflect their values. Because there is no universal fit, most people find it helpful to use an initial conversation to get a sense of the therapist's style and to decide whether the narrative stance resonates with them.

How to choose a therapist who works narratively with self-love

When you are browsing profiles, focus on details that help you compare focus areas, approaches, credentials and languages. Because listings record that a therapist includes narrative therapy among their approaches, you should ask directly how much of their work is narrative and what a typical session looks like. It is appropriate to request examples of the kinds of questions they ask and the practices they use, such as externalising conversations, re-authoring or outsider witness practices. You may also want to ask about the therapist's experience with cultural narratives that are relevant to your life - for instance, messages related to gender, race, family roles or work identity - since those contexts often shape stories about self-worth.

Prior to beginning work, verify licensure or registration where you live. Licensure rules vary by location, and professional credentials can be an important part of how a therapist describes their scope of practice. In a first conversation notice how the therapist talks about partnership and agency - narrative work tends to centre the person's expertise about their life and invites collaborative exploration. If you plan to meet online, understand that narrative work is largely conversational and so video sessions usually suit it well; you can ask how the therapist adapts narrative practices for remote work and what kinds of materials - written reflections, letters or timelines - they might use between sessions. Ultimately, fit is revealed through the relationship: a first conversation is the most practical way to discover whether the therapist's approach and manner align with what you need as you explore a different story of self-love.

Final thoughts

Narrative therapy provides a framework for examining the stories that shape your sense of self and for developing alternate accounts that reflect your values and commitments. If you are curious about how language, relationships and culture have influenced your self-regard, therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches can offer a way of exploring those influences. Use the listings below to learn more about individual practitioners, and ask direct questions about how they work so you can choose someone whose approach feels like a good match for your journey.

Questions worth asking a therapist

  • How do you usually work with self-love?
  • How much of your work is narrative, and what does that look like in a session?
  • What does a first session cover?
  • How would we tell together whether this is helping?
  • Are you licensed or registered where I live?
