Understanding commitment issues through a narrative lens
When you think about commitment - to a relationship, a career direction, or a long-term plan - you are also carrying stories about who you are and what you do. Narrative therapy begins from the idea that people make sense of their lives through stories and that some of those stories arrive thin or unkind, passed down from family messages, cultural expectations, schooling or early relationships. Michael White and David Epston developed this way of working in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s. In the context of commitment issues, those inherited stories might sound like I am indecisive by nature, I always pick the wrong partner, or settling means losing myself. These familiar accounts shape decisions and habits, sometimes making you feel boxed in by a label rather than seen as a person with many influences and possibilities.
The narrative approach does not focus on changing a symptom in isolation. Instead you and a therapist examine the stories that give rise to the dilemma, looking for details, exceptions and alternative meanings. That process opens space to notice moments that contradict the familiar script - small events that show a different pattern - and to slowly craft a richer account of your values, commitments and hopes. This orientation can shift the question from What is wrong with me? to What story is guiding this part of my life, and how might a preferred story look?
How narrative therapy works with commitment issues
Narrative therapists use specific practices to make stories visible and changeable. One common early step is externalising - naming the problem as an external influence so it can be described, examined and limited. Instead of saying I am flaky, you might talk about the ways that a voice or pressure pushes you toward short-term choices. Externalising separates you from a fixed identity and allows you to explore how the problem operates in particular contexts.
Tracing the genealogy of a familiar story is also central. You and your therapist might map where the storyline came from - which family sayings, cultural scripts, school experiences or relationship histories helped it form. That journey helps you see the rules that have governed your decisions and where they were useful or harmful. Simultaneously, the therapist will search for unique outcomes - moments when you behaved differently than the dominant story predicts. These exceptions matter because they provide raw material for re-authoring, the practice of developing a new, fuller story that honours your values and commitments. Other narrative practices include re-membering conversations, which explore important relationships and loyalties, outsider witness conversations that invite respectful reflection from others, and definitional ceremonies that acknowledge and sustain new meanings. In practice, most therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches combine these practices with other methods, so the exact mix you encounter will vary.
What to expect in narrative sessions for commitment issues
Sessions that foreground narrative techniques tend to be conversational and exploratory. Early conversations are often about naming the problem and mapping your story in a way that feels manageable rather than blaming. Your therapist may ask about the first time you noticed this storyline, who supported or enforced it, and what consequences it has produced. Questions are usually specific and curious - asking for examples, exceptions and the values that matter most to you. The pace is typically steady; narrative work values the accumulation of evidence and small shifts rather than quick fixes.
As therapy continues, you will likely spend more time collecting and enlarging unique outcomes - describing moments when you acted in line with a preferred value or saw a new possibility. The therapist may invite you to take small actions outside sessions and report back, or to create documents that articulate a preferred story. Later sessions often focus on strengthening that emerging story so it holds up in ordinary life. Keep in mind that many clinicians who list narrative therapy among their approaches also draw on other frameworks, and how much of each session is recognisably narrative will depend on the practitioner. It is a good idea to ask directly how much of the work they intend to use the narrative approach for and what a typical session looks like.
Is a narrative approach the right fit for you?
People who are often drawn to narrative work tend to want to be treated as more than a diagnosis or a set of symptoms. If you feel boxed in by a family label, cultural expectation or a single story about yourself, narrative therapy can be attractive because it foregrounds your agency and the multiple influences that shaped your choices. Compared with approaches that focus mainly on thought content, such as cognitive methods, narrative work places primary weight on the stories that give thoughts their meaning. Compared with methods that emphasise skills training, narrative work spends more time on meaning-making and values. Versus psychodynamic work that looks for insight into the past, narrative therapy emphasises deliberate re-authoring of present and future stories while still attending to origins.
None of these descriptions is a guarantee that a particular approach will suit you. There is no way to tell in advance whether a narrative approach will be the right fit. Many people use a first conversation to get a feel for the therapist's style - whether their questions resonate, whether the tone feels curious and respectful, and whether the kinds of changes imagined align with your priorities. Therapists often integrate methods when that seems useful, and that integration will affect how the work feels in practice.
How to choose a therapist who works narratively with commitment issues
When you are considering a clinician, focus your questions on how they work rather than assuming training from a listing. Ask how much of their work uses a narrative approach, what a typical session looks like when they address commitment issues, and how they help clients move from naming a problem to building a preferred story. You can also ask where they trained or learned their approach, while remembering that a listing of narrative therapy among approaches does not prove any specific credential.
In a first conversation, pay attention to fit. Notice whether the therapist listens for the shape of your story, shows curiosity about exceptions, and invites you to describe what matters to you. That sense of alignment is often a stronger indicator of helpful collaboration than the exact mix of theoretical names. If you plan to work online, narrative work is conversational and typically adapts well to video sessions, where people can bring documents, timelines or notes into view. Finally, verify licensure or registration requirements where you live so you understand the regulatory context for professional practice. By asking direct questions about approach, session style and professional standing, you can better judge whether a given therapist's way of working matches what you are seeking as you explore commitment and the stories that shape it.
