Understanding compulsion through a narrative lens
When people speak about compulsion, they often tell a story about being driven, ashamed, or trapped by urges that feel beyond their control. Narrative therapy begins from a different starting point - that people make sense of their lives through stories, and that some of those stories are thin, limiting, or shaped by messages from family, school, work or wider culture. Developed in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s by Michael White and David Epston, narrative practice pays attention to how a problem becomes the dominant plot line in a person's life. In the case of compulsion, the familiar story might present the person as a single, unchanging problem - for example, someone who 'is' compulsive or who 'cannot' stop. Narrative work aims to separate the problem from the person so you can examine the story and find moments that do not fit it.
Rather than focusing primarily on symptom lists or on changing thought content, narrative therapy pays attention to language, meaning and identity as they are shaped by interactions and cultural narratives. This approach does not promise that any single method will work for you. There is no reliable way to tell in advance whether a narrative way of working will suit you. Most people use an initial conversation to see if the therapist's way of asking questions and listening feels like a fit. On this page you will learn how narrative techniques are commonly applied to compulsion and what to ask a therapist who lists narrative therapy among their approaches.
How narrative therapy works with compulsion
Narrative therapists tend to use a set of practices that make the problem an object of conversation rather than the definition of who you are. Externalising is the first of these - it means talking about compulsion as something that acts on or around you, rather than as the whole of you. Naming the problem gives you new ways to describe what it does, when it appears and how it affects relationships. This distance makes the pattern easier to examine and opens room for different responses.
Another key practice is tracing the origins of the familiar story. Therapists will explore where messages about compulsion came from - which family rules, cultural expectations or workplace pressures helped make that story convincing. Thin description is used to notice how the problem has been narrated narrowly, while rich description looks for the fuller context in which you have acted. Narrative therapists actively look for unique outcomes - moments when you acted differently, resisted the usual impulse, or felt differently about the situation. These exceptions are carefully gathered and amplified because they become the seeds of an alternative, preferred story.
Over time, work focuses on re-authoring - composing a new account of your life that highlights your values, commitments and surprising actions. Practices such as re-membering conversations and outsider witness conversations may be used to invite others to witness the new story and to strengthen links to supportive persons and communities. Definitional ceremonies, adapted to the context, can be a way of acknowledging shifts in how you and others describe your life. Narrative practice is conversational and collaborative, and it builds toward an account of who you want to be that holds up in everyday circumstances.
What to expect in narrative sessions for compulsion
If you try a therapist who works with a narrative approach, early conversations will often focus on description and separation - naming the problem and learning how it operates in your life. You can expect open-ended questions designed to map the problem's influence, to locate moments when it is stronger or weaker, and to explore the meanings attached to those moments. A therapist might ask you to tell stories about specific times the compulsion appeared and to listen for details that suggest alternative possibilities. The pace is often patient - the aim is to discover patterns and exceptions rather than to rush to solutions.
As trust and clarity grow, sessions tend to shift toward collecting unique outcomes and experimenting with different narratives. That shift may involve exploring values you want to live by, identifying small changes that align with those values, and inviting witnesses who can reflect back the new story. Many therapists who list narrative therapy combine it with other approaches, so the practical elements of a session - such as homework, skill-building or symptom tracking - will vary. It is appropriate to ask a therapist how much of their work is narrative and how they integrate other approaches into their practice. This helps you form realistic expectations about what a typical session will look like with that clinician.
Is a narrative approach the right fit for compulsion?
You may be drawn to a narrative approach if you do not want to be reduced to a diagnostic label and you are interested in exploring the stories that shape your choices. People who feel that family histories, cultural messages or workplace norms have defined them in one narrow way often find narrative work helpful for restoring agency in how they describe themselves. Narrative therapy tends to appeal to people who prefer conversational, meaning-oriented work over approaches that focus mainly on thought content or skills training.
It is useful to contrast narrative practice with other common orientations. Approaches that work primarily on thought content, such as cognitive-behavioural methods, often focus on identifying and testing beliefs linked to urges. Skills-focused approaches may emphasise behavioural strategies and emotion-regulation techniques. Psychodynamic work tends to explore how past relationships and unconscious patterns shape current life. Narrative therapy is distinct in that it foregrounds the stories you live by and actively creates alternative accounts. Many therapists blend narrative ideas with cognitive or behavioural strategies when that makes sense for a client's goals. Importantly, there is no way to tell in advance whether any single approach will suit you. A first conversation with a therapist is the usual way to find out whether their mix of narrative and other practices aligns with your needs and preferences.
How to choose a therapist who works narratively with compulsion
When you look at listings, focus on how therapists describe their approaches, areas of interest, credentials, languages and professional experience. Because listing narrative therapy among approaches does not guarantee a particular training or emphasis, it is reasonable to ask directly how much of their work is narrative and what a typical session involves. You can also ask where they are registered or licensed in your jurisdiction so you can confirm professional standing where you live. Asking about the kinds of questions they use, how they handle safety planning if urges escalate, and whether they involve significant others in re-authoring conversations will give you a clearer picture of fit.
If you plan to work online, narrative work translates well to video because it is conversational and relies on careful listening and shared reflection. You might ask how the therapist adapts practices like outsider witness conversations or definitional ceremonies across remote sessions. In a first conversation, notice how the therapist responds to your story - do they show curiosity about exceptions, do they separate the problem from who you are, and do they invite your values into the conversation? Those elements often indicate a narrative orientation in practice. Ultimately, the decision rests on whether their way of working resonates with you. Many people use an initial session or phone call to assess rapport and to find out how the therapist intends to blend narrative ideas with other helpful tools.
Choosing a therapist is a personal process. Narrative therapy offers a distinctive way of approaching compulsion by focusing on the stories that shape identity and action, and by creating space for alternative narratives to emerge. Use the listings below to read therapist profiles, note who lists narrative therapy among their approaches, and ask direct questions about how they work so you can make an informed choice for your first conversation.
