Narrative therapy and disaster relief: framing the stories people carry

When a disaster touches your life - whether a flood, wildfire, industrial accident or large-scale displacement - it often brings a new set of stories about who you are, what you can do and what the future will hold. Narrative therapy, which emerged in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s through the work of Michael White and David Epston, begins from the idea that people live by stories. In disaster contexts, those stories may be handed down by authorities, media, family or local culture and can become thin - reducing complex experience to a single, unkind storyline. A narrative approach aims to help you step back from those inherited accounts so you can describe them, examine where they came from and notice moments that do not fit the familiar plot.

Rather than focusing first on symptoms or diagnostic labels, narrative work pays attention to the language you use and the patterns that shape your sense of identity after an event. The goal is not to promise a cure or to guarantee a particular outcome. Instead, the work is about uncovering the values and commitments that matter to you and gradually re-authoring a preferred story that can be lived in ordinary days. Many therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches combine it with other methods, so it is common for narrative practices to be offered alongside different tools or frameworks.

How narrative therapy works with disaster relief therapy

In disaster contexts, the familiar story often sounds like a crescendo of blame, helplessness or bleak inevitability - for example, "I am broken," "It was my fault," or "Nothing will ever be the same." A narrative approach starts by separating the person from the problem through externalising conversations. Instead of saying "you are anxious," a narrative practitioner might invite you to describe the anxiety as something that visits or interferes - a voice, a presence or a pattern with its own behaviours and tactics. Externalising creates space to map how the problem affects relationships, daily tasks and hopes without reducing you to it.

Therapists who work narratively will also look for where the familiar story came from - which family sayings, emergency briefings, cultural scripts or institutional responses contributed to it. That tracing helps you see that some narrative threads are borrowed or amplified by systems and not fundamental truths about you. The search for unique outcomes - moments when you acted differently or felt differently despite the pressure of the dominant story - becomes central. Gathering those exceptions gives you material to begin re-authoring. Practices such as re-membering conversations, outsider witnesses and definitional ceremony can be used to acknowledge strengths, reframe loyalties and create a public account of change that others witness and remember with you.

What to expect in narrative sessions for disaster relief therapy

If you choose to meet with a therapist who lists narrative therapy among their approaches, early conversations typically focus on listening to the story that dominates your life since the disaster. The therapist will ask questions that invite you to describe the problem in its own terms - what it does, when it appears, who it influences. These questions are often concrete and descriptive: they encourage you to map the problem's impact and to notice moments when it has less influence. The pace tends to be collaborative and exploratory rather than prescriptive. Over time, sessions move from naming and externalising to thickening descriptions of your actions and values, and then toward re-authoring more preferred narratives.

The kinds of questions you will hear aim to expand description and to reveal unique outcomes - for example, asking about a time you found strength or connection when the dominant story predicted otherwise. Because most therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches also work with other models, the proportion of a session that is explicitly narrative varies by practitioner. It is normal for narrative practices to be blended with practical problem-solving, emotion regulation techniques or community-focused methods. Video or face-to-face conversations both suit narrative work because the approach is essentially conversational and relational.

Is a narrative approach the right fit for disaster relief work?

There is no way to know in advance whether a narrative approach will suit you, and many people use an initial consultation to find out. You might be drawn to narrative work if you do not want to be reduced to a diagnosis or if you feel that prevailing stories - about blame, loss, resilience or recovery - do not capture who you are. Narrative therapy appeals to people who want to reclaim values and commitments rather than only learning symptom-management techniques.

Compared with approaches that focus primarily on thought content, like cognitive-behavioural methods, narrative therapy emphasizes the stories that give those thoughts meaning. Where skills-based models concentrate on learning practices to manage distress, narrative work concentrates on reshaping the storyline that organizes experience. Psychodynamic approaches tend to emphasize insight into early relational patterns; narrative work pays attention to social and cultural discourses that shape current stories. Many therapists integrate elements from other methods when they feel those tools will support a client's preferred story, for instance employing skill-building alongside narrative conversations to help someone enact a newly authored identity in daily life.

How to choose a therapist who works narratively with disaster relief therapy

When you explore listings of therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches, there are practical questions that help you assess fit. Ask directly how much of the work is narrative in typical sessions and what a first few conversations usually involve. Inquire about the therapist's experience with disaster-affected communities, including languages spoken, cultural knowledge and any community-based practices they use. Ask whether they use practices such as externalising conversations, unique outcomes, re-authoring, re-membering conversations, outsider witnesses or definitional ceremony, and how those practices have been applied in group or community contexts.

It is also important to confirm licensure or registration where you live, and to ask about the therapist's approach to working online if you prefer video sessions. A first conversation will give you a sense of the therapist's questioning style, the pace they offer and how they balance narrative practices with other methods. Narrative therapy is conversational in nature, so many people find that video calls allow the same kind of reflective work as in-person sessions. Ultimately, the best way to know whether a therapist's narrative approach fits is to talk with them about what matters to you, to notice whether their questions help you describe a fuller story, and to decide if the ideas you explore feel like a basis for action in ordinary life.

Final note

This directory lists therapists who include narrative therapy among their approaches. Listing an approach is not evidence of a particular training pathway, so you should ask practitioners directly about how they work and verify any professional registration or credentials that matter in your location. Many people discover whether narrative work suits them during the first few conversations, when the focus on stories and values either creates new possibilities for meaning or points toward other approaches that better match their needs.

Questions worth asking a therapist

  • How do you usually work with disaster relief therapy?
  • How much of your work is narrative, and what does that look like in a session?
  • What does a first session cover?
  • How would we tell together whether this is helping?
  • Are you licensed or registered where I live?
