Gambling and the stories people carry
If gambling has become a recurring problem in your life, it is often wrapped up in stories you tell about yourself, your strengths, your limits and your life circumstances. Narrative therapy begins from the idea that people make sense of their lives through stories, and that some of those stories - passed down by family, workplaces, schools or wider culture - can be thin, limiting or unkind. Michael White and David Epston developed this approach in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s with practices designed to notice where stories come from and to open space for alternative accounts.
In the context of gambling, a familiar story might be something like I am the sort of person who can’t stop, or Gambling is the only thing that helps me cope, or Everyone in my family does this. These narratives influence choices and behaviour because they shape what seems possible or acceptable. Working narratively means you and a therapist look at those stories as material to examine rather than as the whole of who you are. The intention is not to argue away feelings, but to understand how particular accounts have formed and to build fuller, richer stories that reflect your values and commitments in daily life.
How narrative therapy works with gambling
A narrative approach to gambling focuses on externalising the problem, which means talking about gambling as something that happens around you rather than as the essence of you. By externalising, you can describe the problem’s influence, its moments of power and its limits. A therapist will listen for the familiar storyline - the recurring descriptions and assumptions - and trace how those ideas were handed down or reinforced. That tracing can reveal how cultural messages, family patterns or stressful life events contributed to the story you now carry.
From there the work pays attention to unique outcomes - small moments or decisions that do not fit the dominant story. These might be occasions when you chose differently, exercised a value that matters to you, or experienced a different feeling toward gambling. Gathering rich descriptions of those moments allows the development of a more complex narrative. Re-authoring conversations support you to link those unique outcomes into a preferred story - an account that better reflects your commitments, relationships and priorities. Practices such as re-membering conversations explore who you want to include in the story of your life and why, and outsider witnesses or definitional ceremony can be used to bring other perspectives that acknowledge changes and strengthen the emerging story.
What the familiar story often sounds like
In conversation you may hear recurring phrases that make the problem feel inevitable: I can’t control it, I’m weak, It’s my fault, Gambling is my only relief. A narrative therapist will attend to these phrases closely, helping you separate the actions of gambling from your identity and to map the circumstances and commitments that keep the story repeating. That separation creates space to work on concrete choices while also honoring the feelings and meanings attached to gambling.
What to expect in narrative sessions for gambling
Sessions that work narratively tend to be conversational and collaborative. Early conversations usually aim to name and externalise the problem so that you can describe how gambling operates in your life - when it shows up, what it asks of you, what it interrupts. A therapist will ask open questions about the influence of the problem, the values that matter to you, and exceptions to the dominant story. These early moves are gentle and exploratory rather than directive.
As work continues, sessions may move toward gathering richer descriptions of moments that contradict the familiar story and exploring what those exceptions reveal about your priorities and capabilities. Re-authoring takes shape as you and the therapist connect those unique outcomes into narratives that support new action. Some therapists use re-membering conversations to consider relationships and to notice who belongs in the evolving narrative. Others may invite outsider witnesses or set up a definitional ceremony to acknowledge changes in a structured way. It is common for therapists who list narrative therapy to combine narrative practices with other approaches; how much of a given session is explicitly narrative will vary by therapist. You can expect the pace to be tailored to how comfortable you feel with examining stories and experimenting with new descriptions of yourself and your choices.
Is a narrative approach the right fit for gambling?
There is no reliable way to tell in advance whether one approach will suit you. People often choose a narrative path when they prefer to be seen as more than a label and when they want to understand how social and relational stories shape behaviour. If you find diagnostic language unhelpful or if you are interested in exploring the meanings and values that underlie your relationship with gambling, narrative work may appeal to you.
Compared with approaches that focus primarily on thoughts or skills, narrative therapy shifts attention to the stories that give those thoughts and skills context. Cognitive-behavioural approaches concentrate on thinking patterns and skill-building, acceptance-based approaches work with relationship to experience, and psychodynamic work often explores earlier relational patterns. Narrative work distinguishes itself by treating problematic behaviour as embedded in narrative contexts and by emphasising the co-creation of alternative stories. Many therapists integrate narrative practices with other methods to address practical choices as well as ongoing meaning-making. Ultimately, most people use a first conversation to assess fit - whether the therapist’s style and the balance of methods feel right for them.
How to choose a therapist who works narratively with gambling
When you are considering a therapist who lists narrative therapy among their approaches, it helps to ask direct questions before committing to longer-term work. Ask how much of their practice is narrative and what a typical session looks like. Ask where they trained and about their experience working with gambling, while remembering that listing an approach is not the same as holding a particular credential. Verify licensure or registration in the jurisdiction where you live so you understand the practitioner’s professional standing.
In a first conversation pay attention to how the therapist listens to your story and whether they invite detail about exceptions, values and relationships. Narrative work is conversational and reflective, so many people find video sessions suit it well because they allow the exchange of narrative material in real time. Ask about languages spoken, experience with particular communities or cultural contexts, and how they combine narrative practices with other methods if you want practical skills or behavioural planning alongside meaning-focused work. Use the initial contact to assess whether you feel heard and whether the therapist offers a clear sense of how they would work with the stories you bring.
Narrative therapy offers a framework for examining the stories that shape gambling and for exploring alternative accounts that reflect what matters to you. If that orientation appeals, the listings on this page are a starting point to learn more about who describes their practice as narrative and to ask the direct questions that clarify fit and approach.
