Understanding domestic violence through a narrative lens
When you think about domestic violence, you are also encountering a set of stories - about who you are, what happened, who is to blame, and what can or cannot change. Narrative therapy begins from the idea that people make sense of their lives through stories, and that some of the stories handed down by families, communities or culture become thin and unkind. Narrative practice, which emerged in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s through the work of Michael White and David Epston, aims to help you notice those stories and to open up alternatives. For someone affected by domestic violence, the dominant story may position a person as powerless, as responsible for the abuse, or as doomed to repeat an unsafe pattern. Narrative work invites you to separate the person from the problem so that the problem can be examined and acted upon without defining who you are.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms or diagnoses, narrative conversations attend to the meanings you and others have given to events. This makes space for values, commitments and moments that do not fit the usual account. In practice, that means the therapy often begins by naming the problem in language that treats it as an external presence - a violent pattern, a coercive voice, a relationship dynamic - rather than an intrinsic trait. The aim over time is to build a more expansive story, a preferred account that highlights your values and practical commitments and that holds up in ordinary life.
How narrative therapy works with domestic violence
Narrative practice uses particular techniques to work with the stories around domestic violence. One central technique is externalising - talking about the problem as something separate from you so that it can be described, tracked and challenged. For example, rather than saying You are controlling, a narrative approach might name the pattern as The Controlling Voice and explore how it operates, when it shows up, and the effects it has. This separation allows you to develop strategies and witness moments where the problem has less influence.
Another practice is tracing where the familiar story came from. You and the therapist might explore how family expectations, social messages about gender or power, legal experiences, or past relationships contributed to the storyline you carry. Narrative therapists invite rich description - not just a shorthand label - so that you can see the complexity of events and relations. They also look for unique outcomes - events or choices that do not fit the dominant story. Those moments offer the raw material for re-authoring. Re-authoring and re-membering conversations work toward a preferred story by amplifying these alternative moments and linking them to your values. Some clinicians use outsider witness practices or definitional ceremonies where others are invited to listen to and reflect on the emerging story. Over time, the work builds a narrative that supports the kind of life you want, including clearer accounts of responsibility, safety, and action.
What to expect in narrative sessions for domestic violence
Your early sessions will often be conversational and exploratory. Many therapists begin by asking you to describe the problem in your own words and to talk about its effects on daily life. Questions tend to be open and focused on specifics - when the problem appears, how it affects relationships and routines, and what you have already done to respond. The initial move to name and externalise helps create distance from self-blame and opens up room to consider alternatives.
As the work continues, sessions commonly shift toward mapping the problem's history and looking for unique outcomes - small decisions or moments that show different possibilities. Later conversations are more explicitly re-authoring in tone: you and the therapist attend to your commitments, to actions you want to take, and to how new storylines might be lived out in ordinary contexts. Pace varies considerably. Some people focus on narrative conversations for a long period; others use narrative techniques alongside practical planning, safety work, legal navigation or skills from other approaches. It is important to know that most therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches combine it with other methods. You should ask how much of the work is narrative, what a typical session looks like, and what other approaches are drawn on when needed.
Is a narrative approach the right fit for domestic violence?
There is no way to tell in advance whether a narrative approach will suit you. Many people are drawn to narrative therapy because they do not want to be reduced to a diagnosis and because they want to work with meaning, identity and values rather than only with symptom control. If you find that a story given to you by family, culture or an earlier relationship no longer fits, narrative work can help you explore and rewrite that story. By contrast, approaches such as cognitive behavioural methods focus primarily on thought content and behaviour patterns, acceptance and commitment approaches focus on values and present-moment strategies, and psychodynamic work often explores earlier relational patterns and how they shape current life. Narrative therapy is distinct in its emphasis on externalising problems, rich description, and the deliberate creation of alternative stories. Many therapists integrate narrative practices with other methods - for example, combining narrative re-authoring with skills training or trauma-informed safety planning - when a blended approach seems helpful.
When you speak with a therapist, it is reasonable to ask how they use narrative techniques alongside other practices and to describe what outcome goals you hope for. A first conversation often helps both you and the clinician see if their style and their mix of approaches align with your needs and priorities. Remember that narrative work is conversational and collaborative, and that it typically aims to build a workable, preferred story that you can carry into ordinary life.
How to choose a therapist who works narratively with domestic violence
Questions to ask and what to listen for
When you are researching clinicians, start by noting which profiles say the therapist lists narrative therapy among their approaches. In early contact, ask directly how much of their practice is narrative, what a typical session looks like, and how they work with safety and practical concerns. It is fine to ask where they trained and how they learned to work with narrative practices, but do not assume that a listing proves a particular credential. Also ask about credentials, registration or licensure where you live, languages they offer, and their experience with domestic violence specifically. Listening for a therapist who explains narrative practices like externalising, unique outcomes, re-authoring, outsider witness practices or definitional ceremony in clear, concrete terms can help you judge whether their approach matches your expectations.
Consider how you will evaluate fit in a first conversation. Fit is often about tone, pace and the clinician's attention to your values and priorities. You might notice whether the therapist focuses on your story in detail, asks about the social and cultural influences on the story, and invites you to identify moments that do not fit the dominant account. Because narrative work is conversational, video sessions generally suit it well, allowing you and the therapist to talk through stories and to use documents or notes when helpful. Whatever medium you choose, make sure you can arrange sessions in a way that supports your safety and practical needs.
Finally, remember that choosing a therapist is a process. You have the right to ask how narrative methods are used, to request clarification about the blend of approaches offered, and to verify professional registration in your jurisdiction. The aim is to find a clinician whose way of working helps you create a more helpful story about your life and who takes account of your safety and commitments as you do that work.
