Stories, identity and the narrative approach
When you think about an issue related to gender identity, sexual orientation or relationships, you are often carrying stories - accounts you and others tell about who you are, where you fit, and what is possible. Narrative therapy begins from that idea: people make sense of their lives through stories, and some of those stories are thin, limiting, or unkind because they come from family, school, workplaces or wider culture. Narrative work focuses on those stories rather than reducing experience to a label or a set of symptoms. In the context of LGBT concerns, familiar stories might sound like you are described as wrong, risky, confused, or an exception to a norm. Narrative therapists aim to help you examine those accounts, notice moments that contradict them, and gradually build a different story that better reflects your values, commitments and choices.
Narrative therapy emerged in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s with the work of Michael White and David Epston. Its starting point is that problems are not inherent to people but are shaped by social narratives. That perspective can be particularly relevant when culture, religion, family and institutions have handed down narratives about sexuality and gender that feel oppressive or misaligned with your sense of self. Narrative practice gives you tools to name those influences, explore alternatives, and create a preferred story that holds up in day-to-day life.
How narrative therapy works with LGBT issues
In narrative practice, you and the therapist treat the problem as something that can be spoken about and examined rather than as an identity that defines you. One common technique is externalising - talking about the problem as separate from you so you can describe its effects, history and influence. For example, rather than saying "I am ashamed," you might explore how shame has been given a role in your story and where that shame came from. Tracing the origins of a familiar story helps you see which parts belong to broader cultural messages and which parts come from your own experiences.
Another central practice is looking for unique outcomes - moments when the familiar story did not hold true. These are small or large events that do not fit the dominant narrative, such as times you acted in line with your values despite pressure to do otherwise, or moments of connection that contradicted an expectation of rejection. By describing those moments in rich detail, you begin to build an alternative narrative with personality and momentum. Re-authoring conversations draw those threads together into a preferred story that reflects who you want to be and what matters to you.
Narrative work also uses re-membering conversations, outsider witnesses and definitional ceremony to surface and honour relationships and values. Re-membering involves exploring who is included in the story of your life and why, and whether important connections have been overlooked or sidelined. Outsider witness practices invite others to listen and respond to pieces of your story in structured ways, which can be powerful for people whose personal lives have been shaped by public narratives. Definitional ceremony offers a way to mark shifts in story and to receive recognition for changes that matter to you.
What to expect in narrative sessions for LGBT
If you choose a therapist who works narratively, early conversations usually focus on listening to your story and naming the forces that have shaped it. A therapist will ask questions that help you describe the problem as something separate from who you are, and will invite you to give that problem a name and describe its effects. Questions are often open-ended and curious - they slow the pace so you can notice details, relationships and exceptions. The tone is conversational and exploratory rather than didactic.
As you move forward, sessions tend to highlight unique outcomes and build richer descriptions of moments that point toward your values. Rather than offering a fixed plan, the therapist will collaborate with you to notice patterns, document progress and explore new possibilities. Over time these re-authoring conversations aim to produce a living account of your commitments that you can carry into daily life. Many therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches combine it with other methods, so how much of a session is explicitly narrative varies. It is common for narrative techniques to be used alongside approaches that focus on skills, insight or emotion processing depending on what you and the therapist find helpful.
Because narrative work is conversational, it often fits well with video sessions, where the therapist and you can engage in sustained dialogue. You can expect a focus on storytelling, careful questioning, and a steady attention to who and what is included or excluded from the stories you tell about yourself.
Is a narrative approach the right fit for you?
There is no way to tell in advance whether a narrative approach will suit you. Many people who are drawn to narrative work do so because they do not want to be reduced to a diagnosis or because the stories they have inherited feel inaccurate, shaming, or incomplete. If you value exploration of meaning, context and identity, and you want a collaborative process that treats you as the author of your life, narrative practice may appeal to you.
Narrative therapy differs in emphasis from approaches that work primarily on thought content, such as cognitive approaches, or from methods that focus mainly on skills and behavioral strategies. It also differs from therapies that prioritize insight into early life events as the central route to change. In practice, therapists often integrate narrative techniques with other methods when it suits the goals you bring. That blending allows attention to narrative questions alongside practical skills or emotion-focused work when needed. Most people use an initial conversation to assess fit and to ask directly how much of the work will be narrative.
How to choose a therapist who works narratively with LGBT
When you review listings, look for therapists who state that they list narrative therapy among their approaches or who describe a narrative orientation to identity and meaning. That wording signals interest in narrative practice but does not prove training or expertise. Ask directly in a first conversation how much of their work is narrative and what a typical session looks like. You can also ask about their experience working with LGBT issues, the languages they offer, and whether they hold licensure or registration in the location where you live.
Evaluate fit by noticing how the therapist responds to your story and whether their questions invite you to explore alternatives rather than assume a fixed problem. You might try a short initial conversation to see whether you feel heard and whether the style of questioning helps you notice different parts of your life. Because the listing only records that a therapist includes narrative therapy among their approaches, do not assume specific credentials or a particular model without asking. If online work is necessary for you, narrative methods translate well to video because the work is largely conversational and reflective.
Finally, think about practical markers that matter to you - focus areas, cultural competence, lifespan experience, and whether the therapist has worked with similar life situations. Use the first conversation as an opportunity to ask concrete questions about how they work, what they focus on in sessions, and how they involve others when appropriate. Many people find that a brief exploratory talk is the clearest way to decide whether to continue with a particular clinician or to keep looking for someone whose approach aligns more closely with their needs.
Final note
Narrative practice is a particular way of approaching stories about identity and relationship. If you are curious about therapists who work with narrative ideas for LGBT concerns, use the listings below to learn about focus areas, approaches and experience, and ask directly about how narrative methods appear in their work. Verifying licensure or registration where you live is an important step before deciding to proceed with any therapist. Most people find that a first conversation provides the clearest sense of fit and of how narrative practices might support their preferred direction.
